to power, it will be difficult for it to remain in office for any length of time, because of its slender majority and its internal contradictions which would be exploited by the opposition. And defectors who join the Congress will always be faced with the argument that "the verdict of the electorate is to form a non-Congress Government, and any party or individual that violates this mandate will be liquidated by the people at the next poll". This argument, which made such strange bedfellows after the elections, still has much strength.
