Letters to Editor a Foothold for Honeywell

Honeywell' (November 18) you des-cribe the "Honeywell computer, of the valve-unit type'' as being "ye^rs behind the times". The computer field is crowded with strange names and numbers, but not much research is needed to find out that the Honeywell H-400 system (which is the system the Government has bought ten of) is a solid-state (ie, transistorised) ma-chine with internal memory-size and operating speeds substantially bet-ter than the IBM 1401 which is the machine that IBM is promoting in India. What is more, the Honey-well output printer is 60 per cent faster than the IBM one, an import-ant consideration when we are con-sidering record-keeping applications where 95 per cent of the time tak-en consists of reading in or printing out information.
