But Bengalis, for all the violent language they use, are really not a very violent people, it would seem. The Statesman took comfort in the statistics released by the Union Home Ministry which said that while as many as 1,592 murders were reported in Uttar Pradesh in the first half of 1967, only 213 were reported in Bengal. It may be a better reflection of Bengali character that as many as 2,000 Bengalis committed suicide as a result of "frustration in love".
