Divided on Synthetic Yarn THE synthetic textile industry has been one of the best organised in the country. Its weaving sector is strong and has considerable political pull, particularly in centres like Surat. The spinning sector, which supplies yarn to the weavers, consists of a dozen or so well-organised units which have also built up a good lobby. Till recently the two sectors seemed to get on well enough together. But now the first signs of estrangement have appeared. The trouble evidently began when the weaving sector's activities in the export of fabrics and import of yarn aroused enough suspicion in the Government for these functions to be handed over to the State Trading Corporation. The weavers tried to resist the STC's entry but unsuccessfully.
