Several reasons appear to have impelled it in recent years to seek collaboration. The manufacture of high grade abrasives is a closely guarded technology and this is particularly true of silicon carbide, an important abrasive material which is entirely imported today. Norton is the world's largest manufacturer of abrasives, with plants in the US and 17 other countries; it spends the equivalent of Rs 7 crores a year on research and development. Collaboration with Norton will help Grindwell to diversify its range of products and produce the necessary materials, too, which it would not be able to do on its own; Norton's international marketing network would also be available to Grindwell when it is in a position to export some of its new products.
