it is reported, negotiated a deal with Italian manufacturers for the import of 3.25 mn lbs of nylon yarn valued at about Rs 2 crores. This would be one of the largest deals of its kind. The quantity purchased works out to about 1,600 tonnes and the average price about Rs 12 per kg. The deniers of the yarn purchased are from 15 to 100, used mainly (70 per cent) for sari manufacture, the balance going for warp- knit fabrics like shirtings and hosiery. At present, India's requirement of nylon yarn is about 20 tonnes/day, of which 5 tonnes/day is met from local manufacture and the rest from imports. The present deal would, therefore, make available supplies for 3 to 4 months
