September 16, 1967 HYVP: The First Lessons THE High Yielding Varieties Programme (HYVP) for major crops like paddy, jowar, bajra and maize is a vital part of the new strategy for agricultural development. The varieties selected are Taichung Native 1, Tainan 3 and ADT 27 for paddy, HB 115 for bajra, Ganga 101 for maize, etc. Used with a package of improved practices and heavy doses of fertilisers, these varieties give spectacular yields. About 32,5 million acres are to be brought under the HYVP by 1970-71 The programme is expected to yield an additional production of 18.8 million tonnes, more than half the increase in foodgrains output in the Fourth Plan. The attainment of the Fourth Plan target for food- grains would, therefore, hinge on the success of this programme.
