Mergers Made a Little Easier

This is not to suggest that the Soviet Union is egging the Arabs on to their ultimate objective of destroying Israel. It is not at all clear that even the Arabs, particularly the UAR, are itching for a showdown with Israel. At the United Nations, the UAR spokesman has declared that his country has no plans for any offensive action. This may well be true; the elimination of the Israeli flag from the Gulf of Aqaba is an achievement that will serve President Nasser well for long time to come among the Arabs. It is Israel which is under severe pressure to act. Even it it is prepared to pocket the ins'ult, will it accept the loss of use of its port at Eliat through which it now gets practically all its supplies of oil and which is the outlet for its developing trade with Africa and Asia? Thus in a desperate Israel deciding to pick up on its own the gauntlet which Nasser has thrown down is the immediate threat of a flare-up in West Asia.
