THE 29TH ANNUAL REPORT of Mettur Chemicals & Industrial Corporation discloses once again the dependence of not only Indian agriculture but also of industry on the vagaries of monsoon. A stringent power cut, kept production in most sections at about 80 per cent of capacity, and occasionally even water supply to the factory proved to be a knotty problem, though the unit is located at the doorsteps of a major dam. The absence of imported raw materials and spares aggravated these difficulties further.

Despite all this, production of caustic soda increased by 23 per cent to 20,557 tonnes while liquid chlorine production suffered a marginal decline. Production of salt increased threefold.
