Depreciation Rates after Devaluation A Correspondent writes:
DEVALUATION has given a new edge to the perennial controversy over depreciating fixed assets on historical or replacement cost basis. Depreciation on historical cost, especially in a period of rising prices, makes inadequate allowance for wear and tear and ultimate replacement. At the same time, it is not possible to find a satisfactory alternative method of charging depreciation, mainly because replacement cannot be clearly distinguished from modernisation of plants, products and processes and there is no uniform or reliable standard available for computing the cost of replacement equipment.
