The compression of public expenditure, an important facet of the structural adjustment programme, will result in cuts in the centre's transfers to the states. What impact will this have on the state's spending on the health sector ? Recent changes in the allocation of resources to health care by the centre and the states are reviewed and an attempt is made to identify the threats to sustainability of present levels of spending on health care.
