In recent years, Chennai has explored desalination as a way to meet growth in population and water needs. Desalination may provide a reliable supply of water, but it is far from being the most cost-effective option. It only addresses the supply side of the issue, providing a false notion of water security. Alternatives such as reuse of treated wastewater can address the twin problems of water supply and waste discharge.
