Code for Repression Sarmistha Ray BOMBAY UNIVERSITY has recently passed an Ordinance, No 125, ostensibly for the ''maintenance of discipline and good conduct among students", but in fact aimed at curtailment of freedom and suppression of political activity. The University authorities have been able to keep the matter a secret for the past two months. As is normal with the University, the Ordinance was passed without any consultation with students. The University informed only principals of colleges and that, too, in order to find out the number of students studying in the various colleges/institutions. It was left to a sympathetic professor to inform a group of students about it. The Ordinance reportedly will be revealed to the students when they seek re- admission to the second term. They will also be presented with a bond, which each of them will have to sign, accepting the Ordinance unconditionally. Clearly, this will have dire consequences for the nascent student movement in Bombay and on the possibility of there ever being one on a larger scale.
