American Multinationals in the USSR-Trends, Implications and Prospects

elimination of the conditions upon which their existence was based the great merchant organisations and their wide ranging trade patterns had for all intents and purposes disappeared. The political and economic situation which the weavers found themselves in at this time was one of extreme segmentation marked by very localised trading patterns and intense and debilitating competition and conflict among the numerous warrior territories. This competition and conflict left even these localised trading patterns in an extremely insecure state.30 This important period marks the advent of European and particularly British power and interest in South India and Tamil Nadu. The significance of the preceding periods to the weaving groups we are discussing should be summarised at this point. We have seen that weavers have occupied an important and noticeable position in economic and social affairs from the early phases of the Pallava period. Their position was one of subordination but importance in the regional assemblies which marked the medieval period from the eleventh to the thirteenth century. With the increasing urbanisation which started with the symptomatic temple-building of the eleventh century and reached its height during the Vijayanagar period they came to occupy a place of considerable importance in these urban areas. Their affiliations with temples and the united character of their guilds were important factors in the enhancement of cheir influence along with the prosperity gained through new economic opportunities. Finally, the ascendancy to this new position along with the other artisan and merchant groups which had reaped a rich harvest in the new urban areas was of such significance that it is theorised that the dual divisions of society so important later on may have reached full maturation at this time.
