Lessons in Disaster Management S Parasuraman THE Osmanabad-Latur (Maharashtra) earthquake of September 30, 1993 ravaged over 70 villages and reduced most of them to piles of stone and rubble. It left 8,311 persons dead and 9,032 persons injured (TISS Survey, 1993). The government and the NGOs have done commendable work in relief operations. Continued collaboration of the government departments and NGOs. and enhanced participation of the community, are crucial for the successful implementation of the programme for reconstruction and rehabilitation.
