It left 8,311 persons dead and 9,032 persons injured (TISS Survey, 1993). The government and the NGOs have done commendable work in relief operations. Continued collaboration of the government departments and NGOs. and enhanced participation of the community, are crucial for the successful implementation of the programme for reconstruction and rehabilitation.
