A Note S C Srivastava This article sets out the background to the evolving of the census schedule and the census questionnaires, with specific reference to the ensuing Census next year, It discusses the general principles that underline the choice and even the wording of the questions, and attempts to trace the historical evolution of the Census schedules from the very first attempt at enumerating the Indian population in 1872 to the vastly more complex operations that are planned for February 1981 THE designing of the census schedules is the most important part of census planning for the success of the enumeration depends on the correct designing of the schedules. In all countries of the world, therefore, great attention is bestowed on the designing of the census schedule. This involves formulation of the census Questionnaires, their exact wording and arrangement as also the format of the schedule.
