Towards the end of the war, Haimendorf was asked by J P Mills acting on behalf of the government of India, to explore the tribes of the NEFA region and this led to his spending a year among the Apa Tanis, a year which Haimendorf describes as the happiest in his life. It also resulted in his book, The Apa Tanis and Their Neighbours
