It will be interesting to see the future course of these verbal assessments, especially on the part of the CPI In 1909, after the brief truce in ideological war that preceded the discussions in May 1969, both parties could revert to casting doubts on their opponent's all-India character, or indeed on their being a Left party at all. But in the present instance, it is only the CPI which seems to have made the offering of the traditional calumet, at least of a verbal variety. But such 'unequal' reassessment of what each party considers the other's ideological deviation is perhaps natural; it only reflects the relative strengths of the two parties.
