that the five Go-oporattves have been able, -firstly, to evolve operational procedures which are better tuned to the requirements of the rural consumer and, secondly, to bring about better co-ordination between the developmental agencies concerned official and non-official, including the credit institutions of the area. At the same lime, some of the societies suffered from managerial handicaps, a few of them felt cut off from the State Electricity Boards, and almost all of them were running into losses, some more rapidly than others, at the level of the tariff which the State Electricity Boards thought fit to charge for the energy they supplied to the Societies. The committee has made a number of recommendations for rectifying these defects, and for ensuring that future rural electric co-operatives are better and stronger in every respect. With a few modifications, these recommenda tions have been accepted by the Board of the Corporation. It is also proposed that the State Governments for their part should be enabled to borrow long- term loans from R. E, C. for their participation in the share capital of the societies. It is expected that four or five rural electric co-operatives will be set up before the end of the current year.
