STEEL INDUSTRY- Half-Baked Decision on New Technologies

December 1, 1984 ceilings on capacity. Import duties on components and peripherals not manufactured in the country will be kept at a low level; import duties on those also made in the country will be high, but will subsequently be reduced to bring local prices to international levels. Some of the actual duties will be announced with next year's import and export policy, but many have already been steeply reduced. Manufacture of large computers will be reserved for two years for the public sector, obviously in anticipation of ECIL signing technology agreements with foreign companies. After this period, any manufacturer will be permitted in principle to enter this field provided it assures the Department of Electronics that it can reach the same levels of indigenisation as achieved by ECIL.
