Maya Unnithan-Kumar The paper uses both contemporary and historical material on the Girasia 'tribals' of Sirohi in south Rajasthan, i) to understand the disjunction between the insider and outsider views of their "tribal' identity, ii) to discuss the extent of the freedom' of Girasia women through an analysis of their symbolic and economic roles, and iii) following from the above two points, to question the use of caste and tribe as analytical categories in south Rajasthan.
