TAMIL NADU Operation Marina and Struggle of Fisherpeople K T Thomson THE Tamil Nadu Public Works Department has of late worked out a programme for beautifying the Marina beach which is one of the important tourist centres in Madras city. This project which was a part of the Metropolitan Beautification Programme funded by the World Bank, required the eviction of fishermen from at least three villages (kuppams), viz, Mattankuppam, Ayodiya- kuppam and Nadukuppam. The fishermen of these kuppams fish very close to the Marina beach.
