THIS book is the revised version of a doctoral thesis submitted by Andre Beteille to the Delhi University. It is based on observation and investigations carried out by the author in one village of the Tanjore distric in Madras State. In a sense the book represents a fusion of sociology and social anthropology: the framework of analysis is sociological and the methods of study are those conventionally used by social anthropologists. But this book has some obvious limitations. Recent conceptual and methodological advances registered by sociologists in the study of power are not reflected in the book, nor is it rich in the presentation and analysis of concrete ethnographic data
