The author reads the autobiography of an American gangster to understand life in the inner cities, their violence, the desire for power, the stability offered by gangs, the oases of love and care, the irrelevance of religion, and the unending struggle to find a 'self' in the midst of all this.

Nalini Pandit Classes in Marxist theory are not mere economic categories. They are living social groups whose attitudes and responses are determined by historical and cultural factors. The materialistic interpretation of history does not imply an exclusive emphasis on the economic factor to the comparative neglect of others.
