All these factors notwithstanding, the future course In Poland is contingent on the ability of the Polish leadership to effect a resolution of the present crisis in a manner that would ensure the reproduction of conditions favourable for the implementation of the widespread demands of its working population. The fact that Solidarity can claim a substantial measure of support for its activities from large sections of the Polish working people has not only contributed to elevate the status of the union's demands to a national level but has also made it a prospective contender for power in the present alignment of political forces In Poland, the others being the Communist Party and the Catholic Church. This Is evident from the union's close links with the Catholic establishment led by Cardinal Wyszynsld, the groups around Karol Malcuzynski, a liberal journalist working for the Try buna Ludu, the official communist party paper and the Kuron group of dissident intellectuals. These together can prove to be an unpleasant prospect for the Polish, leadership which is being increasingly caught between affirming its own capacity to resolve the crisis and 'preventing an uncontrollable situation which could invite an intervention by the Soviet Union.
