Changing Patterns of Juvenile Sex Ratios in Rural India, 1961 to 1971

This paper seeks to contribute to the study of change in mortality differentials between boys and girls over time by examining the changing regional patterns in the juvenile sex ratio in rural India using district-level data from the censuses of 1961 and 1971 The author's purpose here is to describe the pattern of change and to suggest the implications for social theory INTRA-HOUSEHOLD discrimination against daughters in the allocation of food and medical care has been demonstrated by many studies done over the past several years in south Asia, l Such discrimination lowers the health and nutritional status of girls and also results in higher death rates for girls than boys.
