Urbanisation and Employment Trends-A Case Study of Asansol-Durgapur Region

A Case Study of Asansol-Durgapur Region Ardhendu Bhattacarya ONE of the indices of the level of urbanisation is the proportion of total population concentrated in urban settlements. A change in the ratio of urban component may be caused mainly by four factors. First, there may be a continued movement of population from non-urban to urban settlements within the region. Secondly, there may be migration across the regional boundaries. Thirdly, the base urban imputation itself may record a natural increase. And fourthly, there may be definitional change from rural to urban areas. The process of urbanisation is generally viewed as a structural change affecting the patterned activities of the population in the region. For instance, urbanisation is said typically to entail relative rise of employment in non- primary occupations. The shift to non- primary employment represents movement from low productive occupations into more productive manufacturing md service sectors. However, the surge of industrialisation of the labour force is initially connected more with manufacture and less with the .growth of other non-primary activity.
