October 22, 1983 elections got politicised. Almost every village got polarised between two or three factions The factions were aligned either with Congress(l) or Akalis and each faction had organised the support of well-armed gangs. Since the elections to the various Panchayats were spread over a period of 10 days or so, these armed gangs could move from one area to another. The composition of these armed gangs is of political interest. Pro-Akali Dal gangs consisted of the Dai's fanatical followers, Nihangs, and the usually well-armed rich peasants.
