Rape and Honour Crimes: The NCRB Report 2012

The statistics presented in the recently released National Crime Records Bureau report 2012, reaffirm the rising trend of crimes against women. The abysmal conviction rate for these crimes reveals the ineptness of the criminal justice system, which continues to remain hostile to women across the country. The exact extent of honour crimes is not known because these have yet to be recognised by law. The lawmakers need to shed their apathy and design laws to tackle these crimes.  

Protests, the Justice Verma Committee and the Government Ordinance

The government’s response to the protests led by the youth against the gang rape incident in New Delhi, in the form of an ordinance has not met the aspirations of the many protestors and the woman rights’ organisations. It can in fact be accused of being vindictive, having ignored the thoroughgoing recommendations of the government appointed justice Verma committee's report.

JNU Students' Elections and the Lyngdoh Recommendations

The Lyngdoh Committee, constituted to frame guidelines for students' union elections, saw the elections for the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union as a "model to be followed". Therefore, the recent Supreme Court stay on the JNUSU elections on the ground that they do not meet the committee recommendations is unfortunate.
