this regard it has observed : " Considering all aspects of the situation, the Committee feels that there is not enough justification for proposing a separate and higher wage structure for workmen engaged in work with staple or multifibres. This would be discriminatory against workers engaged in work with cotton. Such workers are likely to be more numerous and most of the NTC mills West Bengal are likely to work wholly with cotton for quite some time in future. Some mills will be under the social and legal obligation of producing cheaper varieties of cloth for the masses and therein workers should not, on this account, suffer from discrimination. The Committee also does not see any merit in the argument that profit (or losses) made by mills should justify (a higher wage structure for multi- fibre units)." Due to this decision, some 12,000 workers, if not more, will be deprived of the extra benefits they should have got. Mill owners are, of course, against introduction of any extra incentive or wage differential in multifibre units.
